Club wins Group Challenge Cup at nationals for sixth time
OSHAWA -- The Oshawa Camaros Baton Club enjoyed another fantastic season, winning the Group Challenge Cup for the sixth time at the Canadian Baton Twirling Championships in Edmonton.
The award is given to the club in Canada that has accumulated the most number of points earned from results at provincial and national championships.
The judges rewarded the Camaros' group routines with many high scores and fabulous comments. The club entered seven group routines and came home with four gold medals, two silver and one bronze. Every gold-medal routine came with the privilege of competing in the coveted Grand National Event to choose the overall winner, and this year the Camaros' Seasons of Love group won the Grand National title. LeeAnn and Kyla Wilson of Oshawa share a love of twirling
OSHAWA -- What began as a nice way for a mother and daughter to spend some time together has developed well beyond the expectations of LeeAnn and Kyla Wilson.
In fact, if you listen to LeeAnn, who was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame in 2007 for her accomplishments in baton twirling, her 20-year-old daughter has almost left her in the dust.
"When she turned 12, she just decided this was something that she really wanted to do," LeeAnn says of Kyla, who had first ventured into the sport at the tender age of two. "Never mind it was mom's thing first, it was going to be her thing now. And she has just far, far exceeded anything I could have imagined. She has taken my success as an athlete and doubled it." | Camaros Win GOLD at | | Post:Wednesday, Sep. 21, 2011 | OSHAWA -- The Camaros Baton Club sent an elite team of seven athletes to represent Canada at the 2011 International Cup Tournament in Jacksonville, Florida.
Team members were Rebecca Maciver, Kasey Bretherick, Alyssa Weatherbee, Samantha Metelski, Chantal Sutton, Janine Metelski and Samantha O'Reilly, along with coaches LeeAnn Wilson and Kyla Wilson.
The team arrived to a welcoming party with 60 Team Canada athletes from coast to coast.
Practices started early the next day and ran for six hours a day.
The opening ceremonies were held later in the week with the Camaro athletes and coaches walking in waving Canadian flags.
The first event was the team and group competition.
Camaros-Headlock team drew number seven and with a solid first-round performance managed to rank first out of 19 teams.
For the next two days the athletes competed in one baton (solo), two-baton, three-baton and pairs events, striving to make the top eight and move into the final rounds.
Final team competition was on the last day and nerves were high, but the well-trained team took the floor proudly after being announced from Canada and performed a near flawless two-drop routine.
The judges showed their scores and everyone knew the team won gold.
Kasey Bretherick was a bronze medalist in the senior elite three-baton, Samantha Metelski a bronze medalist in the senior B three-baton and Alyssa Weatherbee a bronze medalist in the senior B solo events.
In all, 14 countries were in attendance, however the number-one ranked country, Japan, was unable to attend due to the earthquake and tsunami that devastated their country in March.
All baton friends from around the world worked tirelessly to raise funds to help the country rebuild their lost twirling facilities. A total of $15,000 was given to the Japanese Twirling Association president.
All twirlers purchased hope for Japan T-shirts and wore them to symbolize their support for the country. The Camaros donated half of their proceeds from their annual twirling show and bought wrist bands and T-shirts to show support. |
